What an EWC or LoW code actually does.

The waste classification code identifies the relevant entry in the List of Waste. In UK guidance it is commonly referred to as an EWC code or LoW code. The correct code must be supported by an accurate description of the waste and, where relevant, an assessment of hazardous properties.

Where the List of Waste provides hazardous and non-hazardous mirror entries, the material may need assessment under WM3 rather than a code being chosen by assumption.

The exact evidence depends on the stream. For recurring industrial materials we normally build the picture from process knowledge and targeted evidence rather than relying on a single laboratory result.

Common classification problems

Can I choose an EWC code from the material name alone?

Not reliably. The waste source and process matter, and some entries require further assessment to decide between hazardous and non-hazardous options.

Is WAC testing the same as waste classification?

No. Environment Agency guidance explicitly says landfill waste acceptance criteria results must not be used for waste classification purposes. Classification and landfill acceptance answer different questions.

Do I always need laboratory analysis?

Not always. The evidence should be proportionate to the stream and the uncertainty. In some cases process knowledge and product information are strong; in others targeted representative analysis is essential.

Does the same guidance apply everywhere in the UK?

Waste classification is based on common technical principles, but regulatory administration differs between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We scope the work around the location of the producing site and proposed route.
